The D.i.Y. Open Fit RIC (Receiver In Canal) also called a Receiver In Ear hearing aid is the most popular hearing instrument in the D.i.Y. hearing aid product lineup. It includes the very latest premium level hearing aid technology available and is automatically shipped with our Virtual Technician Programmer when two instruments are purchased. Traditionally, BTE hearing aids have sent the amplified sound from the hearing aid down into the ear canal through a clear plastic tube. This hollow tube is then connected to an earmold for more severe hearing losses to help hold the sound in or to an open fit tip or dome for more moderate hearing losses. Usually the tubes that have a custom mold provides more gain or amplified sound required for the user to hear. The greater the hearing loss, the thicker the tube needs to be. The D.i.Y. RIC receiver in the canal hearing aid is able to achieve a higher gain or volume while still implementing a small thin tube footprint. This is done by removing the receiver / speaker that normally would be in the hearing aid itself and placing it down into the ear canal and focusing it toward the eardrum. The thin tube is used only to guide and protect the small micro wires inside down into the ear canal and which is attached to a high tech speaker placed there. This produces an exceptionally good sound quality.

The "D.i.Y. RIC Open Fit BTE" is a Virtual Technician compatible instrument and is a 100% digital hearing aid that is a fully programmable hearing instrument that automatically adjust itself in various types of environments to accomodate for loud or uncomfortable noises. The D.i.Y. RIC is a very small, comfortable and nearly invisible Open-Ear type hearing instrument with a case that is as small as any competing hearing aids in the industry. It comes with nearly invisible thin tubes and sound domes or tips. The D.i.Y. RIC is designed to naturally "blend-in" with your hair and skin tones due to it's size and color variences. This instrument is designed with the receiver (speaker) inside of the ear canal as mentioned which will widen the fitting range as well as provide greater volume capacity in the higher frequencies and thereby reduce the possibility of high frequency feedback. This is determined on a case by case basis as every persons frequency specific volume requirements are different.

"D.i.Y. RIC Open Fit BTE" is designed for listeners mainly needing assistance with high frequency hearing correction which is where approximately 60% of the sounds needed to understand speech are occurring. With the use of a custom earpiece, the D.i.Y. RIC’s fitting range can be extended even further, but is especially effective in the lower frequencies for those needing assistance in that area to assist with a more predominant hearing loss.

Hearing instruments generally consist of three main components – the microphone(s) to receive the sounds, a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) which is an amplifier that is designed to process the sounds you are listening to, and a speaker or receiver to deliver the sound to the listener, in the case of the D.i.Y. RIC it is processed by the small wires down through the thin tube. Once assembled, an operating system is installed on the Digital Signal Processor much like on your personal computer, which brings the hearing instrument to life. The finished hearing aid can then be programmed to meet the frequency specific hearing needs of the wearer based on the hearing test at the time of purchase. The operating system and the fitting application enable adjustment of the hearing instruments over time as listener needs and preferences may change.
